Unfortunately, determining the cause of fibromyalgia isn’t typically easy. Researchers believe that the condition has at least some genetic component to it, so if a relative suffers from fibromyalgia, the chances are higher that you could develop it at some point during your life. Furthermore, it has been determined that low serotonin levels can also lead to fibromyalgia.
This condition tends to affect women more than it does men, but it is possible for adults to develop it at any age. The most common symptom of fibromyalgia is a widespread pain throughout the body, usually in the muscular or connective tissue. However, as a result of this pain, many people with fibromyalgia also suffer from the following symptoms as well:
- chronic fatigue
- restless legs
- difficulty sleeping
- irritable bowel syndrome
- anxiety and depression
